Winning Photos in Dogs, Dogs, Dogs! 13th Annual Photo Contest

First Place

Dog: Izzy

Breed: Labradoodle, 3 months

Owner: Tim Trebilcock

Judge’s Comments:
There is nothing quite like watching a puppy experience snow for the first time. You have captured the moment well! The detail in the pup’s fur and the snow crystals is outstanding. A combination of excellent focus, getting in close to the subject, and the pure innocence in Izzy’s eyes makes this photo a winner!

Second Place

Dog: Cheyenne

Breed: Australian Shepherd (10 years)

Owner: Jackie Khalek

Judge’s Comments:
This is an outstanding shot! Cheyenne looks totally in her element posing atop the driftwood. The soft focus, along with the muted colour tone makes this shot appealing to the eye. The driftwood frames the subject nicely, and draws the viewer in.

Third Place

Dog: Miles

Breed: Border Collie/Shepherd

Owner: Mark Fedor

Judge’s Comments:
The red leaves against the black and white fur makes for a nice background, as well as creating striking contrast. The off-centre placement of the dog adds to the effect. Miles looks as though he’s ready to continue his adventure!

Fourth Place

Dog: Madden-Mae

Breed: Golden Retriever

Owner: Mark Anderson

Judge’s Comments:
There is not much cuter than a sleepy puppy, as Madden-Mae proves to us here. The muted background compliments her golden fur, and the side-lighting adds more softness to the picture.

Honourable Mention

Dog: Xeno

Breed: Coton De Tulear, 6 months

Owner: Maureen Cava

Judge’s Comments:
This little guy is ready for another game! Black and white works very well for this image. Great focus and depth of field really makes the subject “pop.”

Honourable Mention

Dog: Guinness

Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever, 2 years

Owner: Paula Rosen

Judge’s Comments: Guinness looks very serene while watching the fish leap at sunrise. Very nice timing – the sunlight on his fur seems to highlight his eager anticipation.

Honourable Mention

Dog: Newton

Breed: Xoloitzcuintle (Mexican Hairless), 9 years

Owner: Heather Cowley

Judge’s Comments:
I don’t think the contest would be complete without Newton dressed in his finest! Interesting camera angle makes Newton appear larger than life, and ready for the game!

Honourable Mention

Dog: Shilo

Breed: Jack Russell Terrier/Beagle

Owner: Heather Pettipas

Judge’s Comments:
Although the mischievous expression on this pup’s face, along with the soft tone of the overall picture is appealing, perhaps cropping the image a little closer rather than blurring the bottom quarter of the picture might have been a better option.
